Old vs New Models

Between 1900 and 1908, the design of the Luger went through a number of changes, the most significant of these were the toggle assembly, frame, trigger and trigger guard and grip safety.

The old model toggle assembly is most easily identified by the dished toggle knobs. This toggle assembly was used on models from 1900 to 1902. Beginning with models in 1903, the new toggle assembly was used. This is most easily identified by toggle knobs which are squared on both ends.

The old model frame (including trigger and trigger guard) was produced from 1900 to 1904, with the new models being produced from 1906.

By 1908 all Lugers were produced with the new toggle assembly, new frame, trigger and trigger guard styles. The grip safety was no longer produced, leaving only the thumb safety. Below is a representative sample of these various styles.
